Hollow Round of Skull zine is published in New Brunswick, Canada. We are always looking for fresh new stories and art. Here are some general guidelines:
All submissions are VOLUNTARY. We cannot pay you becausebecaueb we do not make money from this zine. This is an art for art's sake project! What you get out of it is some exposure and having your work seen (we have readers in Canada, USA and even as far away as Australia!)
All submissions and interactions are done via email.
Stories:
Short fiction, approximately between 2 to 10 pages long in 10 pt font. Poetry is ok too. Email your story in a standard text type format (.doc, .txt., etc.) You retain copyright to your own work, so you can re-publish it elsewhere or do whatever you want with it afterwards. Any subject is fine but the more quirky & offbeat the better. Any genre is accepted, but most stories tend to fall into the categories of comedy or supernatural/paranormal/horror/suspense. Violence, swearing and sexuality are perfectly ok...provided there's more to the story than just that. It probably goes without saying but if your story is deemed racist/misogynist/homophobic/animal cruelty or otherwise hateful we will reject it.
All stories will be accompanied by 1 or 2 B&W illustrations. If you want to illustrate your story yourself, go for it! If you'd rather someone else do the drawing we will pair it up with an artist. Either way, let us know your intention up front. If you want someone else to draw your illustrations, please allow them some time in advance of the deadline to work on it (see section below on Deadlines).
Illustrations:
Illustrations should be a visual interpretation of the story it accompanies -- whatever you imagine that to be. Abstract art, comic book style, pen & ink, Photoshop, collage, photography... any art style is acceptable! All artwork must be ORIGINAL (ie, yours -- not copied or swiped from someone else!) You retain copyright to your own work and you keep any physical copies (we just need a scan!) Send your copies to us in a standard image file type (.jpg, .tif, .bmp) in a good resolution/size for printing. We print in Black & White only, so ensure that your image shows well without colour. In addition to story illustrations there are also opportunities to do cover art and pin-ups. For covers and pin-up, "anything goes" - the subject can be whatever you envision!
Deadlines:
HRoS is published once per year, usually in the Fall (ie., September/October timeframe). In order to have everything ready for publication, it is recommended you get your stuff to us NO LATER than August 31. If you are a writer and you want someone else to illustrate your story, please allow extra time for the artist to do his/her work -- therefore NO LATER than July 31st.
